Building Your Community: Three Strategies for Strengthening Your Support System
Lately I’ve been feeling really grateful for my friends. Over the past week, they have done so many things to support me including listening deeply when I needed an ear, giving me advice on a contract I was negotiating, and offering to make an introduction for me.
All the research shows that a community, a strong social support system, is crucial for overall well-being, happiness and resilience.
If you want to strengthen your support system, here are three strategies you can try:
1. Cultivate Authentic Relationships: Focus on developing genuine connections with people who uplift and empower you. People who share your values, interests, and goals. Be open about your feelings, thoughts, and needs while also being receptive theirs. This intimacy will strengthen your connection.
2. Prioritize Quality Over Quantity: While having a large social network can be beneficial, the quality of your relationships matters more than the quantity. Invest time and effort in nurturing deep, meaningful connections with a few close friends or family members who truly understand and care for you.
3. Offer Help and Seek Help When Needed: Be willing to offer help, guidance, or simply lend an ear to those in your social circle when they need it. Also, don't hesitate to reach out for support when you are facing challenges or need emotional reinforcement. This requires vulnerability, but I promise, it pays off.
By doing these things, you can cultivate a social support system that provides comfort, encouragement, and strength during both good and challenging times.
