Lessons Learned from Two Years in Business

On January 21, 2020, I launched my coaching practice at a party at my parents' house. I was excited and hopeful as I shared my vision with the friends and family gathered.

The past two years have been more incredible than I could have ever imagined. I am eternally grateful for all the people who have supported, advised, coached, hired and cheered me on every step of the way.

One of the most surprising things I have accomplished is writing and publishing The Joy of Thriving While Black. Thank you to everyone who purchased it and shared it with their networks.

Here are the top ten lessons I learned over the past two years running my business. You can apply them to any big, new endeavor.

 1. Share your vision – the whole universe will conspire to help you get there.

 2. Start before you're "ready"– you will never have ALL the information, ALL the market research, ALL the knowledge, a perfect business plan...There is no certainty in business. You just have to start.

 3. Be flexible – everything won’t go according to plan. Be agile to incorporate new information and insights as they come.

 4. Fail fast – capture the lessons learned and move on to the next experiment.

 5.  Celebrate successes – this will help you remember how far you’ve come and inspire you to keep going.

 6.  Be grateful – practice gratitude regularly and be generous in letting people know when they've had a positive impact on you.

 7. Be generous – there is truly enough for all of us. Share freely of your time, energy and wisdom. One caveat–choose wisely and set boundaries so you’re not spread too thin.

 8. Pace yourself – there is a reason that marathons are run at slower paces than sprints. Go at a pace that feels sustainable.

 9. Choose your crew wisely – surround yourself with people you admire, respect, who motivate and inspire you. Iron sharpens iron.

 10. Practice self-care – rest, meditate, exercise, eat well, drink plenty of water, get a therapist...Do whatever you need to do to care for yourself. Without your health and well-being, nothing else is possible.

Thank you for being a part of my community and joining me for this wild and wonderful ride.

I wake up every morning excited to work and share what I am learning.

Please think of me when you’re looking for a keynote speaker for your event, conference or Employee Resource Group meeting.

All you need to do is email me. I am here and ready to serve!
