Oprah? I Wasn't Always a Fan

Let me explain.

I grew up in Chicago and I remember Oprah Winfrey going back to her days at AM Chicago before she had the Oprah Winfrey show. I distinctly remember her style and uncanny ability to make people cry that sometimes seemed forced and exploitative. She was talented, but I sometimes felt like her approach could be harmful to her guests, particularly those who had suffered greatly. She was a pioneer of a talk show style that others hideously perfected.

So honestly, I didn’t pay much attention to her as a talk show host/speaker for a long time. As an adult, I haven’t watched any talk shows really and I don’t have cable so I have only seen the unfolding of the OWN network from afar.

What I do know is that Oprah has evolved so much and allowed us to witness it intimately, even when it was painful. She uses her platform to share her flaws and vulnerabilities publicly so that we can learn from her. For someone, despite her success, who has struggled with self-worth, that is incredibly powerful and brave. The perfection of THAT is why she is so beloved.

I got a chance to hear her speak at the Agnes Scott College graduation a few years ago and she was amazing! Her thoughtfulness, clarity, depth and preparation for that specific audience was really moving.

Last week, I bought the ticket to Oprah 2020 Vision Tour somewhat impulsively. Something just told me that I needed to be there. Fortunately my friend Blythe agreed to join me. Though I had no expectations, they still managed to be exceeded. Over the course of the seven hour day, she easily spent six of those hours with us, personally walking us through a 2020 vision workbook like the teacher she said she might have been.

I was reminded of just how incredible Oprah’s life story is. From her traumatic childhood in Mississippi and being bounced around to various family members to talk show host, actress, producer, media mogul and wellness advocate. Her rise has been meteoric. Her confidence in her 66 year old, mind, body and spirit, enviable.

I am so inspired by her and if I can accomplish even a fraction of what she has, I’ll be really happy.

Needless to say, I am now a fan.
